Mason Courbis is a 33 year-old man living in Midwest America who works a (somewhat) decent job and enjoys spending time playing tabletop games with his friends on weekends. He also happens to be part of an incredibly small minority of people capable of feeling and using magic. In an otherwise mundane world, Mason endeavors to seek out and collect magical artifacts in lieu of pursuing any sort of major life goal or career. He manages to lead an interesting and enjoyable life— until he is suddenly struck dead by a car.

When he finds himself reincarnated into a fantasy world, Mason learns that he is the descendant of a powerful mage, and is roped into helping the unorganized people of Hsura defend and liberate themselves from an invading force known as the Autarchy of Xoul. Mason is then presented with an impressive set of enchanted heirloom plate armor, as well as a mythical Excalibur-esque weapon; he promptly rejects both of these items in favor of a simple cloak and dagger. Mason resigns to disassemble the Autarchy through stealth, subterfuge, and systematic assassination, all the while keeping his identity completely hidden from everyone.

After realizing that he's committed himself to an agonizingly lonely life, Mason decides to live a double-life as an alter ego. Using a magical spell, he physically alters his body into that of a strong, charismatic young woman, and calls himself Kai Freecrest; "Kai Freecrest," is in all aspects the polar opposite of "Mason Courbis," in an attempt to keep his true identity permanently secret. Over time, however, it becomes more difficult for him/her to determine which identity really is their "true" identity.
