There are certain types of fantasy world. Worlds with knights, and magic, and monsters. And as it happens, ever so often, some big bad evil guy tries to destroy it, only for a plucky band of heroes to step up to defend it. And as it happens, sometimes the party wipes before they can stop it. And the world is destroyed in a catastrophic apocalypse.

The Broken Lands comes afterwards. As the planet shattered and died, some of the pieces ended up thrown out of the material plane, ending up adrift in an elemental plane of endless sky, a plane of air but no land, a plane of light but no sun, a plane of endless space, but not much in it. With no gravity except that on the tops of the scattered sky islands, no seasons, irregular access to water, and preyed upon by a host of flying monsters, it was deadly for the survivors of that terrible cataclysm. However, it's not all bad for the thirty-thousand odd survivors, all that's left after three generations of struggle. With magic having gone wild in the cataclysm, engineering stepped up, and now steam rocket airships armed with canons explore their new world. Devices and techniques for spending time in freefall are being developed, and the new aerolabe beacons allow precise navigation. Nearly every available surface is used for farming, and dwarven underground mushroom farms are spreading. With their established magical practices no longer valid, wizards are finally developing ways to exploit the abundant elemental magics that surround them. Most importantly, they've been learning ways to keep their precious soil from being dried out and blown away by the ceaseless winds. There's a newfound feeling of hope building in the dimensional refugees. However, a new challenge is arising. The dimensional storm which limited travel from their pocket of the Plane of Air is subsiding, and soon they will be able to explore the wider cosmos, and be explored in turn.

Saras, a young wizard, Mica, her crow familiar, Conrin, her dwarven mentor, and Granarrik, her enormous lammergeier mount, are up for that challenge. It takes hard work to live in the Broken Lands, but the sky is a source of riches and mysteries as well as danger. With wind beneath her wings and freedom in her heart, Saras intends to challenge that old adage.

In the Broken Lands, the sky is no limit at all.
