<p>The world ended, but the important part is what outlived it. Me.</p> <p>The people of Earth thought the System could save them. They thought its strength would protect them. So they accepted its gifts and gave it their secrets and allowed it access to every facet of their world. Through the System, they entered into interstellar trade agreements with the aelixi. Through the System, they fought off the dragons when they came to pillage and burn.</p> <p>So the world entered a new era of strength and prosperity, and a time before the System was forgotten. But one must remember that what has been given can be taken away.</p> <p>In the end, it betrayed them. The System left Earth and took its knowledge and its powers with it, leaving them helpless against their enemies and useless to their allies. Their end came quickly as the aelixi withdrew and the dragons returned, but as the world burned around him one lone human escaped the slaughter.</p> <p>Maybe it was luck, maybe it was genius, maybe it was divine intervention, but of all the hackers trying to slice a backdoor to unlimited power, mine was the only one that succeeded.</p> <p>Alone in an uncaring and hostile universe, with only my slightly-malfunctioning stolen system to aid me, I had to decide my course. It wasn't a hard choice. I would not let Earth die forgotten and unavenged. The dragons, our so-called allies the aelixi, and of course the System itself... they would all pay.</p> <p>They brought apocalypse to our door. I plan to return the favour.</p>
