<p>Vincent Cordell's life was always... uncanny. Having suffered from paranoid schizophrenia since childhood, his world has been one of whispering phantoms, staring walls, and gruesome hallucinations. Getting a college degree in electrical engineering is hard enough without the constant, nagging worry of falling into the abyss of his own madness. But on one dark night, the abyss pulls him in.</p> <p>A supernatural entity strikes, and a simple car accident becomes anything but as Vincent finds himself thrust into a shattered, alien world where grass is tinged red and blood is blue, and where dragons stand on two legs and live and die like men. And, thanks to a painful, impossible transformation, Vincent is now one of them, stuck in a body he doesn't even know how to use. The natives think he is a figure from the pages of their lore, but he, and the voices in his head, just want to wake up and go home. For choosing to believe in their world would be to undermine everything he has fought for, so he refuses to participate in their prophesies.</p> <p>Cover art by Vipercrown Art</p> <p>A schizophrenic getting sucked into a fantasy world is an idea I've had since at least 2007-ish. It popped into my head while I was mowing the lawn (go figure...) and has never left. But I also take inspiration from many fantasies that came out between 1970-1990 (Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, Neverending Story, etc). I am also inspired by the works of Stephen R. Donaldson (Thomas Covenant in particular), and by my secret affection for boy-befriends-monster/alien stories.</p> <p>I wanted to weave a dark psychological narrative into an 80s era fantasy, basically. I want to invoke the same child-like wonder I had when I watched Neverending Story while also creating a philosophical narrative that (I hope) will stay in peoples' heads.</p>
