How many times has it been now? Hundreds? Thousands? Grey no longer bothers to count. The blinding light and the darkness, the way everything is so clear and also blurred. He has long got used to it. And that's what makes it so strange. This time, it was not the same. Not at all.

There was no blinding light, not like it should have been. The darkness never came to soothe him. Neither did the blur. It's all clear. It's all silent. Almost peaceful, if not for the maelstrom of horrible possible outcomes going through his mind, the burden of a vivid imagination.

After living coutless lives, and deaths, Grey has long grew acostumed to the pain of the shift. That's how he calls it: shifting. After death comes a shift. During the shift comes the pain, unimaginable pain. And after the shift, new life in a new body in a new place, a new reality. Starting over. Again, and again.

But this time it's all different. Some things are missing. Others are there for the first time. Grey feels that, somehow, the shift itself changed, and himself alongside it.

For the first time he felts a sense of self that he never had before, but at the same time there's something uncanny lurking around and within him.

This life may turn completely different then all others. If he manages to survive long enough to protect himself, that is. Because it turns out that the reality where he landed could be the place he fears the most. He isn't sure, but he isn't willing to take any chances.

The only thing he is sure about is that the dungeons are coming. And he doesn't have much time to prepare.

--- Author's note ---

Started as a worldbuilding exercise (that clearly get out of hand). Thank you for reading. Chapters are (usually) a little over 3000 words. Kind of slow paced to avoid information dumps. I will be reading the comments and trying to adjust what I can. No promises. First time author and all that.
