River Pace was supposed to be engaged to Runia Willow as a way to strengthen the ties between both their families. However, when the result of River's appraisal, at age eight, had arrived, Runia's father immediately cancelled the engagement because they found out that River had no magic! River simply gazed at the back of Runia, forever leaving him as she strode into the world of wizardry. He, on the other hand lost everything—he lost his dream of becoming a magical inventor and to make matters worse his family disowned him and flung him to the hectic city to live a normal life.
