The book starts off dark, and doesn't really lighten up until chapter 10. But there is lightness-lots of lightness!-when the MC finds his panda familiar. Or maybe the MC is a panda's familiar? Anyway, the story is hopeful since the MC is lawful good or lawful neutral, and it most definitely isn't grimdark.

There will eventually be romance, but there will never be a harem.
