Once the gods were considered real. Civilizations developed around them and included the concepts of human sacrifice and the concept that creatures and spirits lived amongst us and were both worshipped and feared. Demons would cause natural disasters and some of them protected us from the worst excesses of them. Beings called Angels were considered blessings. Religion has certainly played a large part and science developed in explaining to humans how the world around us operated.

But all of those stories and myths were never forgotten, some had to be locked away for the safety of humanity. Some of the ancient ones were never really forgotten though. They had escaped the wrath of humanity and took on new forms.

Our job was to capture, contain and limit the growth of these monstrosities before the general public became aware of them. Occasionally, one would escape and be remembered again. There was a reason people were said to have short memories. It protected us from the silent terrors of the world. Nobody wanted to go back.
