"Whales" in the context of the gaming community are gamers who spend an exorbitant amount of money on in-game purchases in free-to-play games. They do it either for cosmetics or to get an edge over the competition. They are generally looked down upon by "true gamers".

Sam is one such "whale". He couldn't stop himself from spending money in free-to-play games to save his life.

But what would happen, if a gamer like that somehow ended up inside the game he played and lost the ability to simply buy his way to the top? Well, he better start earning his progress for the first time in his gaming life. And this time, to, quite literally, save his life.
