Description: [edit] [history]

Drew Hinkley Buyers is sandwiched between two lives. At school, she is kind, academically successful, and generally liked by others. She is called "Waterbird" because she always smells like a pool. She sort of keeps to herself and tends to let conversations focus on other dragons rather than herself.

At home, Drew has a dysfunctional family trapped in a crippling financial situation. They cannot afford to send Drew to one of the fawnhomes that every dragon her age should be living in. Her parents have turned to an unsuccessful career in music to support themselves, leaving Drew with the task of digging out of the hole through working hard in school. Her house has no running water, leaving daily laps in the community pool as her only form of cleanliness and main form of escape.

One day, Drew returns home. She has her customary fight with her parents, and then they give Drew a task that might destroy both of her lives.

The story is very internal. There is a lot of worldbuilding, but it's just the environment for Drew to develop in.

***NOTE***

Dragons, in the world of this story, have 3 biological sexes. I didn't label the story '''harem''' because this fact is not important to the story. The finicky-ness of such a reproductive system leads to, among other things:

Dragons are sex-positive. This doesn't not mean there is smut of sexual content of any kind; it means that there is no taboo against the topic of sex, and as such it may be brought up in a casual, matter-of-fact manner. Since there's no taboo, dirty jokes are not edgy, and therefore not funny, so you won't see any of that.

Dragons are attracted to pretty much everyone they see. So much so that friendships are not a thing. There are minor romantic relationships between dragons, and major ones. The major ones are the closest analogue to our own romance. Dragons tend to form huge webs of relationships due to their biological need to form trios. All relationships fizzle out after approximately a year, to prevent an overload of emotions in everyone.

This results in all dragons also being pansexual. Not especially noteworthy. At first I thought it would make sense if they were never homosexual, but then I realized it would be hard for a brain to develop a nuance where they have huge web of romantic relations, but their brains very carefully avoid developing those feelings for those of the same sex.

I will post one chapter a week, as school allows.
