To an orinu, the pursuit of their Iponri—their perfect spiritual self—is everything.

Through spiritual spells and martial techniques, they strive for power.

Zumide is a dreaded talentless, his spirit too weak to form cores. Without them, he is destined to never touch his Iponri. A competition looms, promising those that do well the resources of its host—the Amon tribe. For many, this is an opportunity to quicken their advancement. For Zumide, it is his last chance to become a true orinu.

But when sinister forces strike during the trial, he and his friend Senamon find themselves hunted by enemies far greater than themselves. Zumide must make a decision: Take a suicidal risk in hopes of beginning his advancement, or face certain death.
