When her mother dies during childbirth to the throne's heir, Verinia Hellfryne, First Princess of Oalta, must undertake her role as Mistress of Light Tower by her father's side, all whilst raising her three siblings at the tender age of eight.

After ten turns of the twin suns, when she finally feels settled in her role, the new presence of an illegitimate half-brother proves to bring its share of challenges to the Sovereign Palace, namely, a contest for the throne.

Determined to fulfill her mother's dying wish, Verinia must do everything in her power to ensure her little brother's succession, even risk her life to meddle in politics, something women of her time are forbidden to do by law.

With a power struggle within the Court of Light and the uprising of a rebellion threatening to uproot the very foundations of the continent she loves, Verinia must face her biggest fears and weigh whether or not victory is worth the trial by blood.
