In Atelier City, an artistic haven filled with technological marvels, lies a netherworld where monsters dwell. These monsters embody the dreams of humanity, their greatest hopes and worst fears. Stumbling into this netherworld by accident, Allen Lee, an ordinary young artist looking for wonder, encounters an odd woman said to be a potential inheritor of the title, "Grim Reaper".

With her scythe that can reap dreams and the newfound ability he teaches himself to harness the power of dreams, Allen decides to team up with the Grim Reaper's Inheritor and struggle through the two sides of the city after realizing they both have dreams of their own they can't resolve without the other's help.

This netherworld is a place where a chosen few receive a destiny in the form of art portfolios to follow to etch their legends into its depths. However, if one is not chosen for a favorable path, they simply must choose one of their own. Thus, the duo collects various art pieces to gain insight into obtaining the fortune they both seek.
